May 6 - May 10

On Wednesday May 8th, thank you for sharing a variety of hats to honour mental health awareness day.

Library Day is Thursday.  Please help your child remember to return their books so they can choose a new story to share. with you.

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have music on Monday and Wednesdays.  Please help your child to arrive on time so we are ready for music at 8:00.  Music  involved keeping the beat on our bodies and learning how to say rhythm with a quarter note being a ta and an eighth note - being referred to as 'titi.'

Thank you to Ms. Nida for volunteering in our classroom this week.

We have had a very busy week. We checked on our plants each day to see if they needed water, and if we noticed any sprouts.  Almost all of our plants have sprouted we will be sending them home this week for Mother's Day.  Happy Mother's Day to all mother's.

Literacy:

Our morning messages have been missing letters at the ends of words and we are learning to figure out the missing letters by listening to the sound that the letters make.  We are now listening to sounds in the middle of words and trying to figure out the letter and how to spell the word.
We continued to do spelling practice on the whiteboards this week.  Some of us were able to figure out the beginning sound, others were able to figure out the beginning and ending sounds, and some of us were able to spell the beginning, middle and ending of the words.  The words we practiced this week were: on, the (this is a sight word). It is placed in various areas in our class,  It is one word we just need to know how to spell. The other word we worked on this week was this.  Most of us know how to spell is so we learned to add the "th" onto the word is to make the word this.

We read the story Jack and the Beanstalk and related it to the plants we have been growing for over a month. This week then we retold the story and acted it out during our literacy time.

Math:

This week in math we introduced non-standard measurement.  We used straws and connectors to measure the carpet in our room.  We will continue to explore this topic using volume, comparing one object to another on the balance scale and using other objects to measure length and width.  Parents this is a fun activity to try at home.  You can use pencils, pencil crayons, shoes, etc.

We worked on the number 7 this week and found various ways to add numbers together to make 7.

Centres:

At the Flower Shop Centre, we had lots of forms to fill out for customers who came into the shop and ordered over the telephone.  We used tissue paper and ribbon to make bouquets, we planted pretend flowers in the flower pots. The light table, blocks, puppet stage, books and puzzles, lego, marble works and painting. We did some letter practicing making sure we start at the top and finish at the bottom when printing our letters.

Gym:

This week we concluded our gymnastics unit with Mission Impossible.  This is a huge obstacle course that the student learn to navigate without knocking over objects and traveling slowly and carefully from one obstacle to another.  We played the Mission Impossible themme music to guide us through the course this week as well.

Buddies

This week we  went outside with our buddies and looked at the construction that is taking place on our schools roof.  We noticed that the work has progress since the last time we were outside.  We also looked for signs of spring and noticed the size of the trees on our front boulevard.  We discussed what tree was the 'tall, short, thick, thin, wide, and we counted how many trees border our front school boulevard.   We played red light green light as we walked to the dip and then as we walked to the playground.  We then had a few minutes to play with our buddies at the park.
