April 29 - May 3

Wednesday May 8th, we are encouraged to wear our favourite hat to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness Day.

Library Day is Thursday.  Please help your child remember to return their books so they can choose a new story to share. with you.

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have music on Monday and Wednesdays.  Please help your child to arrive on time so we are ready for music at 8:00.  Music was cancelled this week although we did some Danny Go dancing and action songs as well as learning the actions and words to One Elephant Went Out to Play.

Thank you to Ms. Nida for volunteering in our classroom this week.

We have had a very busy week. We checked on our plants each day to see if they needed water, and if we noticed any sprouts.  Almost all of our plants have sprouted we will be sending them home this week for Mother's Day.

Literacy:

Our morning messages have been missing letters at the ends of words and we are learning to figure out the missing letters by listening to the sound that the letters make.  We are now listening to sounds in the middle of words and trying to figure out the letter and how to spell the word.
We did some spelling practice on the whiteboards this week.  Some of us were able to figure out the beginning sound, others were able to figure out the beginning and ending sounds, and some of us were able to spell the beginning, middle and ending of the words.  The words we practiced this week were: on, the (this is a sight word). It is placed in various areas in our class,  It is one word we just need to know how to spell. The other word we worked on this week was this.  Most of us know how to spell is so we learned to add the "th" onto the word is to make the word this.

We read the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff, this week then we retold the story using flannel board characters.  The students enjoyed acting out the different characters and changing their voices to match the size and characteristics of the goats and the troll in the story.

Math:

This week in math we introduced non-standard measurement.  We used straws and connectors to measure the carpet in our room.  We will continue to explore this topic using volume, comparing one object to another on the balance scale and using other objects to measure length and width.  Parents this is a fun activity to try at home.  You can use pencils, pencil crayons, shoes, etc.

Centres:

At the Flower Shop Centre, we had lots of forms to fill out for customers who came into the shop and ordered over the telephone.  We used tissue paper and ribbon to make bouquets, we planted pretend flowers in the flower pots. The light table, blocks, puppet stage, books and puzzles, lego, marble works and painting. We did some letter practicing making sure we start at the top and finish at the bottom when printing our letters.

( What shapes are in this structure?)

Gym:

We started our gymnastics unit this week.  Thank you for helping your child dress for gymnastics.  We added benches and trestles to the gymnastic circuits as well as using the mats and the floor this week.  We learned how to do a variety of stretches, how to travel in a variety of ways on the mats and the floor and how to climb the trestles using a BMX grip and learning how to travel on the benches.

Buddies

This week we had gym with our buddies.  We were able to show our buddies our favourite gymnastics station and they were able to see some of the skills our buddies had learned in gymnastics.  Next week we continue with gymnastics doing Mission Impossible. This is a huge obstacle course that the students navigate silently while the Mission Impossible Song plays in the background.
