April 21 - 25

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have music on Monday and Wednesdays.  Please help your child to arrive on time so we are ready for music at 8:00.  This week in music we learned some new songs.

Thank you to Ms. Nida for volunteering in our classroom this week.

We have had a very busy week. We checked on our plants each day to see if they needed water, and if we noticed any sprouts.  Almost all of our plants have sprouted and some are twice the size of the pot.

Literacy:

Our morning messages have been missing letters at the ends of words and we are learning to figure out the missing letters by listening to the sound that the letters make.  We are learning the "ing" ending in the word morn(ing) and other words that appear on our morning message.

We read two different versions of The Three Little Pigs.  We worked in groups to make houses of straws, sticks and bricks (which were our big hollow blocks).  We acted out the story.  It was fun to see the students so engaged and learning how to work together to build a house.

Math:

This week in math we counted forwards and backwards.  We continued to work on number talks and matching the numeral to the correct number of objects. Our number this week was 6.  We learned how to make 6 with adding two numbers together this week.

Centres:

At the Flower Shop Centre, we had lots of forms to fill out for customers who came into the shop and ordered over the telephone.  We used tissue paper and ribbon to make bouquets, we planted pretend flowers in the flower pots. The light table, blocks, puppet stage, books and puzzles, lego, marble works and Lincoln Logs. We did some decodable reading and some sight word recognition during centre time this week.

Gym:

We started our gymnastics unit this week.  Thank you for helping your child dress for gymnastics.  We added benches and trestles to the gymnastic circuits as well as using the mats and the floor this week.  We learned how to do a variety of stretches, how to travel in a variety of ways on the mats and the floor and how to climb the trestles using a BMX grip and learning how to travel on the benches.

Buddies

This week we went on a shape walk around the school with our buddies.  We challenged our buddies to help us find 6 shapes that were the same.  6 circles, 6 triangles, 6 rectangles, 6 squares, 6 hexagons and 6 octagons.  Then we played at centres with our buddies.
