April 8 -12

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have music on Monday and Wednesdays.  Please help your child to arrive on time so we are ready for music at 8:00.  This week music was cancelled on Wednesday because the division 2 students were getting ready for the concert.  We were entertained on Thursday morning by a variety of instruments and songs being played on a variety of instruments.

Thank you to Ms. Nida for volunteering in our classroom this week.

We have had a very busy week. We checked on our plants each day to see if they needed water, and if we noticed any sprouts.  Some of our plants have sprouted this week.

We shared puppet shows with our friends.  The train centre is back and we are having fun delivering our flowers to different places on our train route.

Literacy:

Our morning messages have been missing letters at the ends of words and we are learning to figure out the missing letters by listening to the sound that the letters make.  We are even learning the "ing" ending in the word morn(ing).  We also have the word of the day and we try to find places where we notice this word in the classroom .  Today was the word dangle and we noticed that the roots were dangling down through our pot as we checked the growth of our plants today.

We listened to the story:

The Nighttime Gardener by: Tim Fan and Eric Fan.  Ask your child to share what topiary means.

We have listened to some spring stories during snack this week.  We also discussed things we see in our morning talks on the days we don't have music with the Lofi Cat on you Tube.

Math:

This week in math we counted forwards and backwards.  We put the correct number of dots on a ten frame picture.  We added flowers that we drew in 3 baskets together. We are learning to find ways to make numbers when we add two or more numbers together.

Centres:

At the Flower Shop Centre, we had lots of forms to fill out for customers who came into the shop and ordered over the telephone.  We used tissue paper and ribbon to make bouquets, we planted pretend flowers in the flower pots.  Ask your child to share something they enjoyed at the flower shop centre this week. We have get well cards to make for our sick friends, or greeting cards to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, weddings, or graduations to continue to promote or writing skills.  We use white boards and paint to make letters and numbers.  The light table, blocks, puppet stage, Lego, marble works, and train station and puzzles were centres that students visited this week.  We also made our spring tree during centre time this week.

Gym:

We played pilo polo this week.  It is similar to floor hockey except  the sticks have a foam bottom and we use whiffle balls which are light balls with holes in them.  The students enjoyed controlling the balls and shooting at the benches.

 Buddies:

We went for a walk with our buddies outside today.  We walked around the school and noticed the workers on the roof and the new panels they are adding to make our school look more modern and help with heating and cooling in the summer and winter.  We had time to locate the dip or ravine on our school property and roll down the hill or run up and down.  We noticed the buds coming out on the trees, signs of spring.  We had time to run in the ball diamond to practice our Terry Fox Run again.  We ended our outing by playing at the park for a few minutes before we came back in for snack and centre time.
