January 22 - 26

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We have had a very busy week.  Thank you for bringing in the amazing letter treasures for our word search letter hunt game.  The students have been so excited to share and tell about their treasures.

Our letter on Monday is "Bb."  Our letter on Tuesday is "Ee".   Our Letter on Wednesday is "Ss".  Our letter on Thursday is "Kk", and our Letter on Friday is "Hh".   Happy Treasure hunting!

We sorted our treasures in a variety of different ways this week.  One hoop had fluffy items, the other hoop had hard items.  Another day we sorted by things we use and things we play with. We are having fun creating new ways to sort our treasures.

Literacy:

This week in literacy we shared the letter  "Oo", "Dd, Cc, Uu and Gg" treasures.  We sorted them in a variety of ways.  We also drew a picture of our treasure and then wrote one or more sentences about it.  We have some word cards on our word wall board for the students to hunt and find what they want to write about.  Some of the words are colour words, some are shape words others are descriptive words.

We read the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers this week.  We read the story three times because good readers read stories more than once.  Tuesday we read the story for enjoyment and then discussed our favourite art of the story and why.  On Wednesday we re-read the story and then chose one part f the story we liked the best and drew a class picture.  On Friday we re-read the story again and drew our favourite part of the story.  We could copy the class picture or choose another part of the story that we liked. We will need to finish our drawing and colouring on Monday.

Our morning messages have been filled with new words that we have had fun learning and describing.  The five words we learned this week were: ordinary, decide, comfort, wiggle and goal.  Try to find a way to use these words this weekend.

Math:

This week in math we continued learning about shapes and talked about shaoes we noticed when we were drawing our treasures in our journals.  We also had a three second challenge to look at a shape and draw as much as we could remember. With our buddies this week we made snowmen with circle shapes that we traced.  Big, medium and small circles.

Centres:

Space centre, light table, blocks, lite Brite, Lego, sand table, cars and big blocks were centres that were visited by  the students this week.  The highlight this week was looking for letters and buried treasure in the moon sand this week.

Gym:

We played with hockey sticks and pucks this week.  We learned how to pass the puck and shoot the puck into the net.  Some of us even played a mini game of hockey on Wednesday and Thursday.

Buddies:

Today we made snowmen from snowflakes after we traced big, medium, and small circles circles after listening to Sadie and the Snowman on the Smart Board.  Our buddies helped us with our tracing, cutting and creating.
