December 5 - 9

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Thank you for supporting our book fair.  Thank you so much to Tiiu for helping out in the book fair everyday.

Literacy:

This week in literacy we read Sounds Like Christmas by: Robert Munsch.  Monday: I can listen to a read aloud story and talk about my favourite part of the story with a friend.  Tuesday: I can vote on my favourite part of a story and then help draw a class picture to illustrate and show my understanding of who is in the story, what happened on that particular page, and where the story took place.  Thursday: I can draw my favourite part of the story remembering to draw who was in the story, where this part of the story took place and what the story was about.  Friday: I can share and talk about my picture during author's chair sharing.  (Note: not everyone was able to share however throughout the month of December each person will have a chance to share.  We have also been able to unwrap a new book each day with a friend as we count down the twelve days of school left before Winter break.

Math:

This week in math we made two and three part patterns.  We continued counting forward and backwards on our calendar as well as counting in French.  We are trying to learn numbers in other languages as well.  We watched Number Blocks during snack time twice this week.

Centres:

Tub toys, Lego, light table, blocks, playdoh were  all visited by many students this week.  The highlight was our Post Office centre where the students are learning about money to buy stamps and envelopes to mail their pictures to friends and staff around the school.  We sent some pictures to our buddy teachers in room 17 and 18.  We delivered some mail to our Principal and Assistant Principal as well as to Mrs. Milkert in the office. Searching for Elfie each morning has added detective work to our classroom as well.  On Friday we had our grade six buddies read and play at centres with us.  We switched from last week having the students who stayed in the kindergarten room go upstairs to the grade six room and our students who went upstairs last week were able to read and play with their buddies in the kindergarten room.

Music:

We learned some new rhythms and enjoyed having Ms. Dafoe back to play her guitar and sing new songs with us.

Gym:

We played with the parachute on Tuesday.  On Thursday we started learning some simple volleyball skills.  Throwing back and forth over a line to a partner.  We pretended the line was a net.

Upcoming Dates:

Dec. 15th  Gingerbread House decorating with parents if you signed up.

This is a free service offered to children.  I have added the information to the Blog as it was shared by our Family School Liaison.

80% of learning is visual, which makes having a comprehensive eye exam an important start to a child’s learning journey. The first step is to book an appointment with a doctor of optometry. They will check your child’s vision and eye health during an examination. These exams are covered by Alberta Health*.If it is determined that your child requires eyeglasses, they will receive a free pair of glasses.

MyBus Stop Update – Push Notifications

Southland Transportation has updated the MyBusStop app to include push notifications.

When there is a posted delay on a bus route, families can now receive an alert directly to their mobile phone.

To receive notifications families must have the app installed on their phone and have registered on the web site

They can subscribe to their route using the code provided in MyCBE. They can then allow the app to provide them notifications on their route delays (see link for instructions).
