January 29 - February 2

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Exciting News!  Kindergarten students will now have music with our music specialist Ms. Laney.  We have music first thing on Monday and Wednesdays.  Please help your child to arrive on time so we are ready for music at 8:00.

We have had a very busy week.  Thank you for bringing in the amazing letter treasures for our word search letter hunt game.  The students have been so excited to share and tell about their treasures.

Our letter on Monday is "Rr."  Our letter on Tuesday is "Ll".   Our Letter on Wednesday is "Ww".  Our letter on Thursday is "Jj", and our Letter on Friday is "Yy".   Happy Treasure hunting!

We sorted our treasures in a variety of different ways this week.  We continued to sort our treasures in a variety of ways.  We are learning how to compare objects using mathematical language such as heavier, lighter, longer and shorter.

Literacy:

This week in literacy we shared the letter  "Bb", "Ee, Ss, Kk and Hh" treasures.  We sorted them in a variety of ways.  We also drew a picture of our treasure and then wrote one or more sentences about them.  We have some word cards on our word wall board for the students to hunt and find what they want to write about.  Some of the words are colour words, some are shape words others are descriptive words.

We read the story Here We Are by: Oliver Jeffers this week.  We read the story three times because good readers read stories more than once.  Tuesday we read the story for enjoyment and then discussed our favourite art of the story and why.  On Wednesday we re-read the story and Mrs. Montgomery our Kindergarten Strategist asked us a variety of questions about the book.  She shared that she really liked how the author used labels and pictures to represent his thinking.

Our morning messages have been filled mixed up words that we have helped our teacher fix.  We are learning that sentences begin with capital letters and end with a period.

Math:

This week in math we began working on number talks.  We are learning that there are many ways to represent a number.  We can write the numeral (5).  We can draw objects. We can use talley marks. We can write the name of the word (five)

Centres:

Space centre, light table, blocks, lite Brite, Lego, sand table, cars and big blocks were centres that were visited by  the students this week.  The highlight this week was looking for letters and buried treasure in the moon sand this week.

Gym:

We played gaga ball this week.  We learned how to avoid being hit by the ball as well as rolling the ball to try and hit a person to take them out of the game.  We are learning how to be a good sport and to cheer on our friends.

Buddies:

Today we continued learning how to log into our computers with our buddies support.  We also read our sentences to our buddies after we finished writing about our treasures.
