October 17 -21

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week in kindergarten we were very fortunate to have in-line skating three times.  The students were very keen and learned so much.  We learned how to put on and take off our safety equipment.  We learned how to stand and how to fall safely.  Ask your child what they liked the most about in-line skating.

Thank you for supporting our colour theme this month.  It was wonderful to see all the purple colours on Monday and all the rainbow colours on Friday.

This week we continued playing at a variety of centres.  I can use my imagination and make many creative buildings.  I can pretend to bring a variety of food items to my friends and adults in the room.  I can tell you I had many delicious pretend cups of tea, hot chocolate and coffee from every student in kindergarten.  Thank you everyone.

We also continued working on our station rotations.

Station 1 - I can print the upper and lowercase letters of the week,  and colour and draw a picture to represent the letter of the week.  ( This week we learned the letter 'Ee')

Station 2 - I can draw a picture to represent the letter of the week in my journal.  ( This week we learned the letter 'Ee')

Station 3 - Using Wikki Stix ( waxed string that bends) I can practice making the letters of the alphabet.

Station 4 - I can colour and draw a picture  representing the book: Harold and the Purple Crayon.

Station 5 - I can use counters and objects ( manipulatives) to represent numbers from 1- 10..

After listening to part of the story "The Rainbow Goblins" I can make and a draw a picture to show my understanding and make a  prediction about  how the story might end.

Upcoming Dates and News:

Our pumpkin carving days will be post-phoned until Wednesday and Thursday this week.   Thank you to everyone who has offered to donate a pumpkin.

Hello parents/guardians,
Update on field trips within walking distance

The CBE values the educational benefit of field trips. Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school.

Please be advised the process for trips within walking distance of the school has been simplified, excluding restricted activities, e.g. swimming. As parents/guardians, you will no longer need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park. Appropriate walking distance is determined by the Principal and may vary, depending on the age of the students.

Teachers will provide at least 48 hours’ notice when planning a trip to a local site. You will be notified about these trips by email (Messenger).

The following is a list of sites near the school that teachers may use to complement classroom learning:

Southwood Library 2 km

Name of location

Address / Description

Distance from school

924 Southland Dr SW,

Calgary, AB T2W

Block: Anderson Road to Southland Drive to Elbow Drive to 14th Street.

As with any field trip, we want to inform you about some common hazards involved with walking trips to the above locations. Please note this list may not include all of the hazards for a given trip:

Slips, trips and falls;
Getting separated from the group;
Street crossings;
Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies;
Exposure to infectious diseases (i.e. COVID-19 virus, SARS, MERS, influenza).

If you have any questions regarding field trips within walking distance of the school, please contact me or your child’s teacher.

Kind regards,

Marina Clark
Principal | Ethel M Johnson School
